Gauteng health dept gets its finances in order

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Health says it has sufficient resources to meet its obligations between now and the end of the financial year in March.

“According to the third quarter report, the department has spent 76% (R20.6 billion) of the R27.1 billion adjusted budget, exceeding its target by only 1%,” said department spokesperson Simon Zwane.

Zwane said the over-expenditure was due to the payment of accruals from the previous financial year.

The department released R146 million on 30 January 2013 to pay all its suppliers. The payments were received by the suppliers this month.

Zwane said the department had instituted a pre-payment audit process to avoid duplicate payments.

He said invoices that were verified as payable following the pre-payment audit process were released weekly with the approval of the Chief Financial Officer.

The department had, up to 30 January 2013, paid all small, medium and micro-sized enterprises.

“The department has spent 74.6% of the adjusted payment on compensation of employees. This is expenditure is well within the expected target of 75%.

“As the department, we are confident that we have sufficient resources to see us through to the end of the financial year in less than 40 days,” Zwane said. – SAnews.gov.za
