Gauteng disaster management teams on high alert

Friday, March 23, 2018

The head of the Gauteng Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), Dr Elias Sithole, says the PDMC remains on high alert amid the heavy downpours.

“The disaster management centres in the affected municipalities have been activated and are on standby,” Sithole said on Friday.

Sithole said the disaster management response teams are assessing the situation at the affected municipalities.

“The City of Joburg reported a few incidents of flooding. These are from low-lying areas and those near rivers.

“The PDMC, together with Municipal Disaster Management Centres (MDMC), are working around the clock to intervene and offer aid where needed.

“We urge residents, especially those situated on low-lying areas, to be vigilant during this time and take the necessary precautionary measures,” Sithole said.

He urged motorists to be cautious on the road and not to cross overflowing bridges. – SAnews.gov.za
