Gauteng condemns traffic officer killing

Pretoria - The Gauteng provincial government has condemned the killing of an officer attached to the Gauteng Traffic Police.

Inspector Ravelino "Relly" Solomons (30) was gunned down at a traffic light about 100 meters away from Hillbrow police station on Friday.

A 32-year-old taxi driver, who earlier on had his taxi licence confiscated by the Gauteng Traffic Police, was arrested in connection with the murder. He is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Both Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Nonhlanhla Mazibuko, and MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, have condemned the killing.

They commended the police for their swift response in arresting the suspect shortly after the incident and called upon the law enforcement agencies to take proactive steps to bring an end to taxi violence. - BuaNews
