Thursday, May 17, 2018

Gauteng Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, Sochayile Khanyile, has strongly condemned the senseless killing of the Meadownlands Police Station Commander at his home in Protea South, Soweto, last night.

The Station Commander was alleged approached and fatally shot by unknown gun men while entering his home.

Police have confirmed that the motive of the shooting is unknown, and that investigations are currently underway.

Khanyile said violence against police officers was worrying and highly unacceptable.

“Police Officers are charged with the responsibility of protecting and securing the safety and security of citizens, and any attack on them places the safety of South Africans at risk.

“We urge law enforcement agencies in the province to move with speed in bringing to book those responsible for this senseless act and send a strong message that any attack on police officers is an attack on the safety of our communities and must never be tolerated.

“We call upon anyone who might have information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for this merciless act to provide this information to the police,” he continued.

Khanyile, has on behalf of the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, extended sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased Station Commander.

“We hope that the family will find comfort in the knowledge that the entire Gauteng province shares their pain and loss as many relied on the courage and bravery of the deceased for crime prevention and protection.

“As a Committee responsible for providing oversight over law enforcement agencies in Gauteng we will continue to follow this matter with relevant authorities to ensure that they leave no stone unturned in bringing to book the perpetrators responsible for this senseless act,” Khanyile said. – SAnews.gov.za
