FS girls’ tourney to take place on Women’s Day

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Pretoria - This year’s edition of the Free State Dlala Mantombazane girl’s tournament will take in Thaba Nchu on Women’s Day, 9 August.

The tournament is a multi-coded sport tournament run by the provincial Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation. It is a development opportunity for young girls in sport, and it aims to lay the foundation for a lifelong interest in sport.

Dlala Mantombazane focuses on girl learners in schools under the age of 17 years. It is a culmination of the district finals, which brings together all the towns in each district.

It starts at local schools as intra-schools competitions, which proceed until the district competitions. The provincial competitions serve as the selection stage for the National Top Schools Championships, which is held in December.

The athletes will take part in the following sport codes:

  • Basketball – Under-13 and Under-17
  • Football – Under-13 and Under-17
  • Chess – Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17
  • Volleyball – Under-13 and Under-17

The winning school will be taken through the local Athlete Development Programme at the Talent Development Centre to prepare the team for the National Top Schools Championships where they will represent the province.

Athletes will also have an opportunity to be selected for the R 100 000 National Minister Bursary for best performance.

As part of the department’s vision and commitment of empowering women through sport, this tournament will ensure that girls are made aware and prepared for greatness in sport from a young age.

The tournament is also a way of celebrating Women’s Month, which recognises that women could not take part in certain activities such as sport.

2014 marks 60 years since women’s charter was adopted and 58 years since the 1956 march to the Union Buildings.

The month of August also marks 101 years of women’s struggle. - SAnews.gov.za
