Free State recalls students studying in Turkey

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Pretoria - The Free State Provincial Government has recalled 52 students who were pursuing their studies in Turkey following the recent attempted coup in the country and the closure of universities, says the provincial government.

“The 52 left [South Africa] in May to pursue their studies in the areas of engineering, economics, management and psychology. This brought the total number of students in Turkey to 89,” said the provincial government.

The provincial government said the other 37 students have been in the country, and are home for their summer holidays.

SAnews understands that the 37 will also not return to Turkey after the holidays due to the situation in the country, unless things return to normal.

“The province will try to secure placement for students in other universities as an alternative as we don't know when the political situation in Turkey would reach normality,” said the provincial government. - SAnews.gov.za
