Pretoria - Judge Nathan Charles Erasmus has stepped down as chairperson of the South African Board of Sheriffs.

Justice Minister Jeff Radebe, who accepted Erasmus' request to relinquish his membership and chairpersonship of the board, praised the Western Cape High Court Judge for his contribution.

"The minister and the board wish to thank Judge Erasmus for his leadership and guidance of the board in the past two years and for the contribution he made in the quest to transform the sheriffs' industry," the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development said.

Deputy Chairperson of the Board, Charmaine Mabuza, has taken over Erasmus's role until Radebe makes an announcement regarding the vacancy.

The board was established in terms of the Sheriffs Act of 1986 to regulate all sheriffs in the country and ensure that they act in accordance with the laws of the country.

It is responsible for the investigation of complaints against sheriffs and makes recommendations to the minister for remedial steps to be taken against any sheriffs who act outside the law.
