Sedibeng – The Select Committee for Social Services in Parliament has commended the Department of Human Settlements for considering the indigent groups when allocating houses.
Speaking at the launch of Celebrity Build at Savanna City in Sedibeng District Municipality, Chairperson of the Select Committee, Cathrene Dlamini, said that when the department asked for money for its budget and its plan, they checked if they deliver on what they promised to do.
“Our emphasis in this financial year is that, we approve the budget but there are things that we want you to correct in the department. The first people that you must consider are elderly people, disabled people, child-headed families and women headed families, and that’s what we are seeing today,” said Dlamini.
About 18 000 houses would be built under the Savanna City Integrated Human Settlements project. Among the beneficiaries was 112 year-old Elda Mazongolo and 106 year-old Selina van Rooi.
The houses are expected to be officially handed over to the elders by Human Settlements Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu on Saturday.
In preparation for the big day, on Monday, some of South Africa's celebrities joined industry stakeholders including mayors and officials from Sedibeng District Municipality in painting and gardening of the completed houses.
Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Jacob Mamabolo said that next year the department would launch a project, which will see the construction of 60 000 houses. – SAnews.gov.za
