Ekurhuleni to host career expo for unemployed youth

Pretoria - In a bid to reduce its 28% unemployment rate, the City of Ekurhuleni will host a two-day Career Expo on 9 June at the Alberton Civic Centre.

This will be followed by a Job Summit on Thursday, 11 June, at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre.

In its fourth year since its inception, the Ekurhuleni Career Expo and Job Summit has become an eye opener to unemployment young people.

The three-day interactive program will provide young people with an opportunity to interact with various companies that will be exhibiting in the Expo. There will also be an opportunity to register their CVs on the Ekurhuleni unemployed youth database.

The database is currently used by the municipality to assist unemployed graduates by placing them in Youth Work Readiness Placement programmes and other skills development and related entrepreneurship development programmes.

Career advisory services and a computer lab with internet connection for those who do not have access to resources to develop their CVs are amongst the facilities that will be provided at the free Career Expo.

Stakeholders that the municipality has partnered with will present their skills development and training opportunities, including bursaries and learnership programmes at the Career Expo.

Job creation, business opportunities in Ekurhuleni, improving and up-scaling initiatives for youth employment and enhancing job creation are amongst the topics speakers will address at the Job Summit.

“The Career Expo and Job Summit will again bring civil society, business leaders and academics together in mapping a way forward on how to address the challenges of unemployment and low skills levels that the youth of Ekurhuleni is faced with,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The event will end with a gala dinner at Birchwood hotel where a certificate awarding ceremony will take place in recognition of companies that have been involved in community development projects.

Residents are encouraged to bring their CVs and visit their nearest Customer Care Centre to book for free transport to the career Expo. – SAnews.gov.za
