Pretoria - With the month of June just around the corner, the City of Ekurhuleni is getting ready to celebrate Youth Month with many activities lined up, including a youth summit and career expo.

The two-day summit, which will take place on June 3 - 4, will be used as a platform to show the youth what prospects are available for them in the region.

The three-day expo, set for July 6 - 8, will highlight career opportunities available to high school learners, graduates and out of school youth. Organisations from various fields have been invited to exhibit and equip the expo attendees with essential career guidance.

Both events will be held at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Boksburg.

"We have compiled a programme that is aimed at educating the youth within the region on matters pertaining to development, including access to employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. This programme will be implemented under the theme, Together Building Better Youth, through Access to Economic Opportunities," said Zweli Dlamini, the metro's spokesperson.

Dlamini said the municipality had a role to play as a driver of social change, but this could only be done effectively in partnership with various public and private entities.

"Our key focus for the 2011 Youth Development initiatives is designed to enable access to development, career and entrepreneurial opportunities for the unemployed and/or unskilled youth of Ekurhuleni," he said.

June 16 this year will mark the 35th anniversary of the 1976 June uprising.
