E Cape monitoring learner transport

Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Pretoria - The Eastern Cape Department of Transport, together with the Provincial Portfolio Committee of Education, is this morning monitoring the transportation of pupils to schools across the province.

Eight groups comprising departmental officials, MPLs and researchers will visit different schools in Alfred Nzo, Amathole, Chris Hani, Mthatha, Cadadu, Port Elizabeth, Aliwal North, and Bufallo City.

Provincial traffic officers will also conduct inspections on all scholar transport routes to check overloading, roadworthiness of vehicles, documentation of drivers’ operating licence as well as a professional driving permit.

The operation runs from today to 24 January 2014.

Several interventions have been implemented since the migration of the Scholar Transport programme from Education to Transport Department in July 2011.

The move was intended to improve the services of, among others, the development of a monitoring plan, which is currently being implemented and regular roadblocks and inspections by traffic officers. - SAnews.gov.za
