District six illegal occupants to be evicted

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Pretoria - A group of people who claimed to be the original land claimants of the District Six land who forcefully and illegally moved into 15 houses on Saturday have been given a court order to vacate the houses before 10am today.

The Western Cape High Court on Monday granted the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform an interim court order to evict a group of illegal occupants at District Six in Cape Town.

The Department’s Head of communications, Vuyani Nkasayi said: “The group, who claimed to be original land claimants of the District Six land, forcefully moved in the houses and illegally occupied fifteen houses late on Saturday, 15 June.

“The Department then tried to negotiate with this group, but they refused to leave the premises, which then left the Department with no option but to approach the court for an urgent eviction order.”

According to Nkasayi, the interim order means that the group must vacate the premises before 10am today and if not, they will be legally evicted through the sheriff of the court.

The case will be heard again on Thursday for final order, where both parties (Department of Rural and Land Reform and illegal occupants of the land) will present their case before the Judge.-SAnews.gov.za
