Pretoria - Residents of Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, and the surrounding areas will no longer have to travel to town for shopping once the building of a mall at the Denneboom train station, has been completed.

The Tshwane Executive Mayor Kgosietso Ramokgopa and the Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Wednesday unveiled plans for the R850 million development of a mini CBD at the Denneboon train station.

According to the Office of the Mayor, the project is expected to be completed by April 2017 and will consist of a mall and transport hub, made up of taxi and bus terminals.

The mall is expected to accommodate about 1 400 taxis and 600 traders. It will also have a medical centre.

In his address at the unveiling of the project, Mayor Ramokgopa said once completed the project would have a positive effect on people’s lives.

"Previously when our people wanted to go shopping, they had to go to town. We promised to change that and this is part of it.

“We started with a mini central business district in Mamelodi, which was followed by a shopping complex and hostels,” he said.

Mayor Ramokgopa said the new development was part of plans to revitalise the township.

The launch was part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Ntirhisano project where government visits areas where projects are underway.

The two-day Ntirhisano visits in Pretoria kicked off in Eersterust where the Premier told the Eersterust community that his administration did not want the public to march to his offices but they will instead march to the people to hear their concerns. - SAnews.gov.za
