Pretoria - The strengthening of bilateral cooperation between South Africa and Hungary will take centre stage when International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers hosts his Hungarian counterpart, Dr. László Szabó.

Deputy Minister Landers will host Dr Szabó in Pretoria on Tuesday.

In a statement on Sunday the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said the visit will deepen understanding on regional and multilateral issues of mutual concern.

The visit will also encourage further trade and investment in key drivers of South Africa’s economy to create jobs, specifically in terms of promoting the export of value-added products to the Hungarian market.

“The two Deputy Ministers will discuss the possibility of forming a Joint Commission on Co-operation (JCC) between South Africa and Hungary,” said the department.

Full diplomatic relations between South Africa and Hungary were established in July 1991.

South Africa maintains an Embassy in Budapest and Hungary maintains an Embassy in Pretoria and has also appointed an Honorary Consul in Cape Town.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has grown considerably since formal diplomatic relations were established. South Africa is Hungary’s most important commercial partner with one-third of exports from Hungary to Africa going to South Africa. – SAnews.gov.za
