The Fisheries Branch of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has extended its condolences and support to the families of the fishermen who lost their lives along the Cape St Francis coastline in the Eastern Cape.

The department on Tuesday said it remains supportive of efforts to find the missing fishermen.

Media reports indicate that 16 crew members were on board when their chokka boat capsized on Sunday. Eight of the crew are still missing, while one has been confirmed dead and seven were rescued.

“We are saddened and are supportive of all the rescue operations to locate the remaining crew and fishers. The department has deployed a team to the Eastern Cape to support the operation,” said the department.

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Senzeni Zokwana, is scheduled to visit the affected families during the week. –
