Pretoria - The Department of Defence has called for stronger partnerships in the sector in order to build a competitive, world class South African defence industry.
"What is crucial to understand is that this partnership between the military and the local defence industry is not aimed at obtaining self sufficiency in the provision of armaments, but ensuring a degree of self-reliance for both the SANDF and the SA government," said Defence Secretary Nompulelo Mpofu at the Fourth Defence Industry Day on Thursday.
The department's Industry Day aims to strengthen coordination and cooperation between government, the South African Defence Industry (SADI) and other relevant stakeholders.
"For this partnership to succeed, there will have to be enhanced, consistent and transparent communication between the SANDF and the industry," Mpofu said.
According to the department, the event assists SADI to understand government's intent on defence matters, therefore positioning themselves for the development and enhancement of defence products that are relevant to SA Defence.
Defence Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla echoed the same sentiments, saying government recognised and supported the defence industry and intended to see it grow and contribute both locally and abroad.
The event is hosted by the Department of Defence in conjunction with the Department of Trade and Industry.
