Deadline looms for election candidates

Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Pretoria - Thursday marks the deadline for political parties and aspiring independent candidates to submit candidate nominations for the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The deadline, according to the Electoral Commission, is 5pm.

“Nominations may be submitted by hand at local IEC offices for the municipality where candidates will be contesting the elections,” the IEC said on Wednesday.

For the first time, nominations may also be submitted online via the Electoral Commission’s website (www.elections.org.za).

“The Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) is a secure system for which users must first register in person with proof of identification.”

For this reason, those who have not yet signed up to use the online system are advised at this stage to submit nominations manually.

The IEC says the OCNS has proved popular among political parties with 37 parties having registered to use the system.

“A total of 28 448 ward and Proportional Representation candidate nominations had been submitted online as at 10H00 on Wednesday.”

A further 2077 nominations had been submitted manually and captured at IEC offices.
