Low-cost technologies to improve the quality of water and service delivery in municipalities will be displayed at the 12th National Municipal Managers Forum taking place in Mpumalanga this week.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will display these technologies at the forum, which takes place from 20 - 21 February.
The forum will be co-hosted by the South African Local Government Association and the City of Mbombela Local Municipality to showcase proven innovations and technologies that have the potential to improve municipal performance and governance.
One of the technologies, AmaDrum, is a household based water treatment and safe storage system for households that do not have access to treated water. It is used to check the quality of water from unprotected sources in efforts to reduce the risk of diseases such gastroenteritis, diarrhoea and cholera, among others.
According to the CSIR, this technology is being piloted in Nkomazi local municipality in Mpumalanga and has been rolled out as part of a water services delivery project.
Another technology to be exhibited is the Corrective Action Request and Report System (CARRS), a web-based incident management system to assist communities in reporting water service delivery.
The CARRS project is currently being piloted in eight district municipalities around the country – Amathole, Capricorn and Vhembe in Limpopo, Ehlanzeni in Mpumalanga, iLembe in KwaZulu-Natal, and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati, Ngaka Modiri Molema and Bojanala Platinum in the North West. – SAnews.gov.za
