Pretoria - Rural communities will now also get in on the Cricket World Cup action as the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has decided to broadcast matches at the Village Viewing Areas (VVAs) used for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The Cricket World Cup will kick off on 19 February and takes place in Mumbai, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Big screens. DSTV and other relevant equipment were installed in the VVAs during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and therefore the department decided to sustain the continued use of the sites as recreational facilities and the Cricket World Cup will also ensure the optimum use of the facilities.
The department hopes that there will be the same hype for cricket matches - the Department of Sport and Recreation has already launched the Magnificent Cricket Friday campaign to generate excitement around the event and support for the national cricket team.
The VVAs were established at the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) sites to bring much-needed services closer to the people especially the youth. The equipment was donated to the communities after the soccer World Cup. This was to supplement for the lack of resources in rural communities.
The CRDP is the comprehensive strategy adopted by the department to enhance socio-economic development in rural areas.
