Thursday, November 23, 2017

uMngeni Local Municipality Councillor Sthe Mhlongo has been shot dead in his house, says the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).

The department on Thursday expressed outrage at receiving the news regarding Mhlongo’s death.

He was reportedly gunned down by unknown assailants, who knocked on his door in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The department said the assailants apparently pretended to be police officers.

The department’s MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube has condemned the cold blooded murder in the strongest terms.

“Violence has no place in our democratic dispensation. We urge law enforcement to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay," said the MEC.

She said this is a time for society to stand together and draw the line in the sand to isolate and expose criminal elements who do not respect human lives.

The MEC has urged communities to be vigilant in order to prevent the proliferation of violence in communities.

The department has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family, community and political party of the slain councillor.

It said it will be in contact with the grieving family regarding Mhlongo’s funeral arrangements and these will be announced to the public in due course. - SAnews.gov.za
