Pretoria - Correctional Services National Commissioner Tom Moyane says he is confident the department will achieve improved financial management.

Following a presentation on Tuesday in Parliament to the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services on the department's latest annual report, Moyane said: "Our Minister Sibusiso Ndebele instructed us to implement a turnaround strategy and plan to ensure improved financial management with respect to issues raised by the Auditor-General regarding the Department of Correctional Services 2011/12 annual report."

According to Moyane, the department met with officials from the Office of the Auditor-General to work out a roadmap and put the necessary measures in place to ensure a complete shift.

"We are working hard, and we are confident that our collective efforts as a department will result in better financial management," said Moyane.

The department received an unqualified audit for the 2011/12 financial year and has set a target of achieving a clean audit within the next 18 months.

The Auditor-General's findings include underspending of R893.5 million on the department's R16.7-billion budget. - SAnews.gov.za
