Pretoria - Newly formed, break-away party, the Congress of the People (COPE) has just won its millionth vote in the 2009 General Elections.

The 129-day-old party, managed to clinch a million votes, a few moments ago.

While not toppling the Democratic Alliance (DA) as the official opposition in the country, Cope is making significant inroads and might become the official opposition in at least five provinces - the Eastern Cape, North West, Free State, Limpopo and Northern Cape.

Speaking to BuaNews on Thursday night when his party had reached the 700 000 mark, presidential candidate Reverend Mvume Dandala said he was pleased with the accomplishment given how new the party was.

"I'm feeling great. Already we have overtaken anything one would have expected, especially by way of new parties formed after 1994," Mr Dandala said
