Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has sent her condolences to Gogo Gertrude Makhanda and her family, who lost six family members in a fire that broke out in Phillipi East, Cape Town.

Makhanda’s son, daughter-in-law and her four grandchildren lost their lives in a fire that broke out during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“I must say it is heart-breaking to learn about this tragedy. To the family, I would like to send my deepest condolences in these trying times. This is sad, especially when we, as a country, are still dealing with the backlog of housing,” said Minister Sisulu.

The Minister said as government continues to deal with the huge task of providing decent homes to destitute people, it urges citizens to take care and avoid fires that cause death and mayhem. - SAnews.gov.za
