Pretoria – Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements Paul Mashatile has sent his condolences to the family and friends of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality Councillor Nonhlanhla Mthembu.

Mthembu, 50, collapsed during the first sitting of the Johannesburg Council on Monday. She later died.

The mother of two was an African National Congress Proportional Representative Councillor for ward 119, which include Naturena and Freedom Park since 2011.

Mashatile said Mthembu was the true soldier in the fight to improve the lives of people of the City of Johannesburg and Gauteng.

“Even when her party was faced with challenges, Mthembu carried the mandate of those who had elected her until the end,” said MEC Mashatile.

The MEC also sent condolences to the residents of ward 119 and Mthembu’s comrades in the ANC.

He said after Mthembu’s party has mourned her death, they will be expected to follow the procedure to replace her as prescribed by the law. – SAnews.gov.za
