Sunday, October 4, 2015

Pretoria - North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has set up a committee to come up with ways to resolve the issues that lead to protests in the Kopela village.

During protests over water, residents in the area burnt down three schools and a clinic.

The committee includes of the District Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema, the Mayor of Tswaing Local Municipality, Councillors, the Chief, representatives of the traditional council and an official from the Department of Water and Sanitation who is based in the province.

The Premier visited the area on Friday. He also visited the burnt schools and clinic.

Due to the extensive damage, no learning and teaching can take place at the three burnt schools and the clinic can no longer serve the community in its current state.

“I decided to visit Kopela to personally observe the extent of the damage and to understand what drove the community to resort to burning schools and a clinic,” said the Premier.

He urged the traditional leadership and community members to cooperate with the MEC for Education and Sport Development Wendy Matsemela when she visits the area for a meeting with parents and stakeholders on Monday.

The meeting will look at alternative and interim accommodation for the learners who will sit for their final examinations in the next three weeks.

Chief Moshoete of the Kopela village thanked Premier Mahumapelo for his prompt intervention.

Premier Mahumapelo will visit the village again to ensure that the councillors give the community a package of responses to all the issues they raised in a memorandum of demands. - SAnews.gov.za
