Pretoria - The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is inviting learners with good matric results who also come from indigent families, child-headed families and families in distress to apply for mayoral scholarships before the end of this week.

Ekurhuleni Mayoral Scholarships are awarded annually by the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Ntombi Mekgwe, to deserving learners. The scholarships are not limited to any particular field of study. Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said they are awarded to matriculants based on financial need and academic achievement.

"The amount allocated for the scholarship is determined on an individual basis and may vary from one candidate to another.

"If granted, the money will not be paid to candidates, but will be credited to their student accounts with the academic institutions enrolled with," Dlamini said, adding that current scholarship holders must reapply as their contracts are not automatically renewed for the new year.

Applications for the bursaries opened in November and will close on 15 January 2010. Forms are currently available at the metro's libraries, clinics, customer care centres and on www.ekurhuleni.com.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants need to submit a detailed monthly salary slip if their parent(s) are employed, certified copies of Identity Document, municipal services statement account, academic statement, brochure of school or registration letter, certified copies of death certificates if parents are deceased, proof that parents/guardians are indigent and any other relevant information.

"Successful candidates will be obliged to enter into an agreement with the municipality and all completed applications must be submitted where they were obtained. All documents must be certified and no document older than three months will be considered, incomplete applications will lead to an automatic disqualification," said Dlamini.

Only successful candidates will be contacted within 30 days after the closing date.
