Pretoria - Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has welcomed the department’s clean audit opinion from the Auditor General.
Speaking at a ceremony by the Auditor General to recognise departments who received clean audits for the year 2014/15, Minister Mbalula put emphasis on the importance and role Chapter 9 Institutions like the Auditor General play in safeguarding and protecting the public purse.
“We received this award for the year 2013/14 and we are doing it again for 2014/15. We are committed to good governance and to doing more with limited resources.
“Our attitude is that we can deliver to our people and account for every cent spent in line with the legal prescriptions. As a small department with limited capacity and resources, our staff have to work twice as much to ensure that we are compliant and to achieve this status,” Minister Mbalula said on Monday.
The Minister explained that the spirit of good governance and adherence to proper financial compliance has now permeated within the department as well as the provincial departments responsible for sport and recreation.
The department is now going through with the process of monitoring sport bodies and national federations by the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) on Transformation in Sport. The process also insists on good governance in the delivery of sport by these bodies and federations in the country.
“Receiving an unqualified audit opinion is one thing, maintaining it is another. At Sport and Recreation South Africa we are receiving these opinions and maintaining them. We insist that this should be a way of life in government,” said Minister Mbalula. – SAnews.gov.za
