City to assist thousands of indigent households

Thursday, April 28, 2011

Pretoria - The City of Tshwane has set a target of registering 150 000 indigent households by 2016, according to Executive Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa.

He said the council would do this by increasing the number of registered households by 90 000, 110 000 and 130 000 in the 2011.12, 2012/13 and 2012/14 financial years respectively.

Ramokgopa announced this when he tabled his budget of R66.3 billion over the medium term on Thursday.

He said the current number of indigent households on the register had been adjusted to 63 000 due to the exiting of some households from the programme. This would "leave enough room for indigent households in the Kungwini and Nokeng tsa Taemane areas," he said.

The mayor was referring to the two local councils which will be incorporated into the city of Tshwane after the 18 May local government elections.

The city will spend R411.8 million, R564.5 million and R745.9 million for the 2011/12,2012/13, and 2013/14 financial years to assist poor households with services. - BuaNews
