Pretoria - Cabinet has welcomed the appointment of President Jacob Zuma by the United Nations (UN) to co-chair a High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth.

On Monday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that President Zuma will co-chair a new high level commission that focuses on health employment and economic growth with French President François Hollande.

“This appointment is in recognition of the sterling leadership displayed by our President in the international arena,” Cabinet said on Thursday after their regular fortnightly meeting.

The commission will stimulate the creation of new employment opportunities in the health sector across all countries, especially in least developed ones.

The focus of the commission, goes to the heart of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted in September last year, and which could go a long way to address the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

Staying on international relations, Cabinet has also expressed appreciation for the contribution that South Africa has made towards restoring peace in Burundi.

“This is in line with our foreign policy commitments to ensure a peaceful and stable continent,” Cabinet said in a statement.

Furthermore, Cabinet welcomed the outcomes of the inclusive Inter-Burundian Dialogue held at the weekend.

President Zuma was leading a delegation of five Heads of State dispatched by the African Union to engage in consultations with Burundian leaders on finding a lasting solution to the crisis in the east African country.

The delegation met with Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza, leaders of political parties and representatives from religious and civil societies. - SAnews.gov.za
