Pretoria - Minister in the Presidency for Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Jeff Radebe says Cabinet has urged teacher unions to work with government in finding solutions with regard to the current challenges in the Annual National Assessments (ANA).
“The ANA are a critical tool to identify gaps so as to ensure targeted interventions for the development of learners and teachers,” he said.
Addressing the media in Pretoria earlier today, Minister Radebe said government hopes that challenges with regard to the ANA will be resolved.
“We do hope that that government and the teachers will be able to resolve the challenges with regard to the ANA. The decision taken was in the interest of education,” he said. He said meetings are still being held with the teachers to address the challenges.
The Department of Basic Education has said the ANA tests will be written from December 1 to 4, this is after the department had earlier announced that the assessments would be written in February next year.
In a bid to address concerns raised by the teachers and the challenges facing the system, a task team is being set up to look into the administrative, frequency and other concerns regarding ANA which were raised by the unions. Minister Radebe said the decision taken by the minister was in the interest of education.
“While government notes the concerns raised by teachers, it maintains that education should be the main priority,” Minister Radebe said. – SANews.gov.za
