A Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officer has been sentenced to five years in prison after accepting a R400 bribe.

According to media reports, Vuyani Totoyi was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to jail in the Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.

It was reported that Totoyi accepted the bribe in a November 2014 incident while he was on duty.

The 44-year-old stopped a motorist over the condition of the vehicle’s tyres. He then instructed the motorist to “make him smile” through a bribe.

The motorist, who at the time did not have any money on him, arranged to meet the officer at a later stage.

With both parties agreeing to this, the motorist later drove to the Despatch police station and reported the matter after which Totoyi was arrested. - SAnews.gov.za
