Brazil draw puts Portugal through

Durban - Portugal have reached the final sixteen at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after their much anticipated final group match ended in a draw.

Brazil, who already qualified, didn't take much chances and Portugal also proved disappointing, largely due to misplaced passes and silly bookings.

Portugal needing only a point from the clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, made three changes to their starting line-up.

Defenders Duda and Ricardo Costa along with forward Danny made the starting eleven, replacing Pedro Mendes, Hugo Almeida and Simao Sabrosa.

Brazil omitted Robinho out of their starting line-up and was replaced with Nilmar, while Julio Baptista came in for the suspended playmaker Kaka in midfield.

The first half of the game saw seven yellow cards being issued as the two sides engaged in rather petulant behaviour much to annoyance of their devout football following.

Brazil coach Dunga hauled off midfielder Felipe Melo just before halftime and was replaced by Josue. Pepe also received a yellow card after his fiery exchange with Melo.

In the first half, Nilmar's close-range attempt tipped onto the post by Eduardo then Maicon's header cross bounced just wide of the goal.

The Portuguese side hardly looked like the outfit that annihilated North Korea in their second group match and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to produce any of his classy goals.

Ronaldo tried his luck with inaccurate long-range free kicks and was kept in check by Inter Milan defender Lucio for a long time.

The Portuguese captain's first attempt went way too high over the net, the second to wide, while the third was deflected by the Brazilian goal keeper.

Portugal will now face Spain while Brazil will take on Chile in the next round.

In the other Group G match, Ivory Coast defeated North Korea 3-nil in Nelspruit but it was not enough as the African side required nine goals and a Portuguese defeat to make it to the next round
