Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Pretoria – The bodies of five illegal miners have been discovered at the old Durban mine in Roodeport, opposite Matoleville in the Johannesburg area.

Of the five bodies, one was of a female.

City of Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi told SAnews that the bodies were discovered on Tuesday evening.

According to Mulaudzi, the bodies were brought to the surface by other illegal miners. He expressed concern over illegal miners, saying they continued to put their lives in danger.

The cause of death is still unknown.

Another body, believed to be of an illegal miner, was discovered on Sunday in Roodepoort.

Twenty-five people were rescued last week from an abandoned mine in Benoni on the East Rand.

Two other bodies of illegal miners were also found in a separate mine shaft in Benoni last week. - SAnews.gov.za
