Bicycles to help EC learners get to school

Pretoria – Transport Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and Eastern Cape Transport and Safety MEC Weziwe Tikana will on Monday donate 100 bicycles to learners from Nobangile Senior Secondary School.

This is part of the Shova Kalula Programme, a non-motorised transport system aimed at lightening the learners’ burden of having to travel or walk more than 3km to and from school, as they do not qualify for scholar transport in terms of policy provisions.

The department introduced the Shova Kalula programme in 2005 with an objective to provide a non-motorised form of transport for learners walking long distances to and from school, especially in rural communities. – SAnews.gov.za
