Beware of fake email using Communication Minister's name

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Government has warned the public against a fake email, purportedly from the Minister of Communications Nomvula Mokonyane, and intended to defraud the public.

The Department of Communications said the fake email, which has been widely circulated, seeks to defraud recipients using the name of the Minister. It further contains “untruths that are offensive to name and character of the Minister”.

“The Minister wishes to state that the contents of the email are outrageous, illegal and the work of organised groups or individuals that use the name of prominent individuals and their families to defraud unsuspecting and vulnerable members of the public.

“These scams have in the past used fake Facebook accounts in the name of Minister Mokonyane and other government Ministers to illegally solicit funds from members of the public under the impression that these were to facilitate opportunities in BRICS related projects and other schemes of government,” said the department.

A criminal case has been opened with the Brooklyn Police station, in Pretoria.

Members of the public who have fallen victim to this scam are urged to contact the police to assist in their investigations. – SAnews.gov.za
