Pretoria - The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education is currently meeting education stakeholders in Sterkspruit, in the Eastern Cape, to assess the impact of Sadtu’s rejection of inspectors and district officials to schools.

Parliament on Thursday said the visit follows reported disruptions in the Sterkspruit District, allegedly by teachers who are affiliated to the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU).

The Chairperson of the Committee, Nomalungelo Gina, said the visit is a fact-finding mission.

“Learning could not happen if there were no inspections and monitoring. A district like Sterkspruit which came in last in 2013’s results could not afford any form of disruptions to education,” Gina said.

The Committee is expected to meet with various stakeholders, including organised labour, Community Forum, and school governing bodies. - SAnews.gov.za
