Banyana CAF team to be announced

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Pretoria - Banyana Head Coach Augustine Makalakalane is expected to announce his 21 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women Championship team on Thursday.
Currently, there are 23 players at the camp and Makalakalane will drop two players from his provisional squad which will represent the country.

The seventh edition of the CAF Women Championship, which will kick-off from 31 October to 14 November, will be played in Ekurhuleni near Johannesburg.

Makalakalane has promised that the final squad of 21 players will be ready and able to deliver as they carry the rainbow nation's hopes and dreams when they face Tanzania at their opening match at Sinaba Stadium.

They will play African football powerhouse Nigeria on 4 November and Mali on 7 November at the same venue.

Group B consists of defending champions Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Cameroon and Algeria. The semi-finals are scheduled for Sinaba stadium on 11 November at 10:30 and 15:30 respectively.

Makalakalane said: "Banyana Banyana outplayed Tanzania 6-nil in a friendly international at the Huntersfield stadium near Johannesburg in July, so we know quite a bit about their style of play.

"They rely on fitness, speed and strength, but thanks to SAFA and our sponsor Sasol as well as input from Sport & Recreation SA, we have had quite a few training camps and friendly internationals this year to ensure that we are sufficiently prepared for the African tournament."

Tanzania is coming to the tournament as the 18th best side on the continent and is in position 113 on the FIFA world rankings.

Referring to Nigeria, Makalakalane said Nigeria is a power-play-type team with lots of experience having played in several World Cups.

"We played Cameroon in September and although we went down 2-nil, the match gave us a good indication of power play football.

"Cameroon is not in our group at the CAF African Women Championship 2010, but their play is similar to that of Nigeria. We know exactly what to expect from the Nigerians," he said.

Nigeria is ranked number one in Africa and occupies 28th position on the FIFA world rankings, while Mali are ranked 83rd on the FIFA world rankings and 12th in Africa.

Banyana are standing at 57th in the world and 3rd on the continent; however statistics mean little when it comes to challenging for the two places to represent Africa at the 2011 FIFA women's World Cup in Germany next June.

"We played Mali in Tembisa a week and a half ago so we know their abilities, I am confident with the current state of our preparations.

"Banyana Banyana have set their minds on the ultimate dream of making their debut at the FIFA women's World Cup so let's support them as a united country of sports-loving people," he said.
