Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Economic Development will for the first time celebrate township entrepreneurs at an awards ceremony which will be held next month.
The Township Entrepreneur Awards (TEA) will recognise and celebrate inspirational businesses from the province’s disadvantaged areas.
The Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile, said the youth of Gauteng were the most affected by unemployment.
“It is against this backdrop that the Gauteng Department of Economic Development recognises entrepreneurship as one of the enablers for the Gauteng City Region to make considerable inroads tackling unemployment,” MEC Maile said on Tuesday in a statement.
The provincial Department of Economic Development said it had received more than 250 entries and they were screened as well as adjudicated; resulting in mainly four finalists in each of the 11 categories.
Selection criteria included innovation and creativity, financial management and performance, social and community impact, sustainability and economic opportunities, as well as management systems and processes.
The awards will be held on 12 March at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus. - SAnews.gov.za
