Artists to perform at Mandela Sport Day to be announced

Pretoria - Arts and Culture Minister, Paul Mashatile, is on Monday expected to announce the artists who will perform at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day.

Mashatile will announce the artist line up of both local and international artists who will perform at the concert that is scheduled to take place on 17 August at a media briefing in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The concert will take place after the soccer and rugby match to be held at the FNB stadium on Saturday.

For the first time in the history of South African sport, South Africans will watch both rugby and football teams playing against their opponents at the same venue.

The Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day is a joint programme by various partners, coordinated by the Department of Sports and Recreation, to celebrate and promote the legacy of South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela.

Bafana Bafana will take on Burkina Faso, while the Springboks will play Argentina. The matches will be preceded by a match between South Africa's soccer legends.

Speaking at the launch of the day at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg in July, Mashatile said the event will contribute to social cohesion.

The proceeds will go towards building the Nelson Mandela children's hospital in Gauteng.

Madiba is still in a critical condition although his health is steadily improving. He was admitted to the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria on 8 June for a recurring lung infection. - SAnews.gov.za
