Apologies for delay in GPL opening

Pretoria - The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) has apologised for the delay in the opening of the legislature on Monday.

The opening of the legislature and Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's State of the Province Address began an hour later than it was scheduled to.

"The Speaker profusely apologises to the Premier, members of the House, our esteemed guests, the media and all stakeholders for the unprecedented delay. The delay was as a result of heavy rain showers across Gauteng hampering the timeous departure of buses from the departure point from the five regions of Gauteng," GPL said.

The occasion, attended by about 2 000 people, was a resounding success, GPL added.

Monday's event was the second time that the GPL held its official opening outside the normal legislative precinct.

As part of constitutional requirements for corporative governance and building partnerships, the official opening was held in Mamelodi in partnership with the City of Tshwane and the University of Pretoria.
