Amended act to benefit small scale fishers

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has signed a proclamation bringing into operation the Marine Living Resources Amendment Act, 2014.

The Presidency on Friday said the act was signed into law on 14 May 2014.

“The implementation of this act is very important for the small scale fishers,” said the Presidency.

The Presidency said the act’s predecessor, the Marine Living Resources Act, 1998 (Act No 18 of 1998), did not recognise small scale fishers or small scale fishing activities, and as a result, small scale fishers were marginalised through the allocation of fishing rights. - SAnews.gov.za
