The Alfred Nzo District Agricultural Show hosted in Matatiele has provided smallholder farmers with a platform to access markets, showcase their produce and strengthen their participation in the mainstream economy.
The annual event, hosted by the Department of Agriculture, brought together farmers, buyers, agricultural stakeholders and community members in support of local agricultural development.
Farmers from across the district displayed livestock, fresh produce and other agricultural products, highlighting the diversity and quality of farming in the region.
Eastern Cape MEC for Agriculture Nonceba Kontsiwe commended farmers for their resilience and commitment, describing agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and poverty reduction in the province.
“Agriculture is a mainstay and the backbone of economic development in this province. I am very happy today to see that people in Alfred Nzo are working very hard to alleviate poverty.
“Through these shows people are not only selling their produce but they are able to gain experience from each other, engage with market agents and gain an understanding of what is needed to secure stable income for their businesses,” Kontsiwe said.
The provincial department noted that the event attracted strong community support, with residents purchasing fresh produce and livestock products, providing a boost to local trade and creating income opportunities for emerging farmers.
Agri-Shows programmes were reintroduced last year by the Department of Agriculture as a means to provide farmers from all districts with opportunities to showcase their products and connect with potential buyers, investors and industry role players
Beyond creating market opportunities, the agricultural show enabled farmers to exchange knowledge, network with stakeholders and engage directly with potential buyers and market agents.
The MEC also welcomed the growing participation of young people in agriculture, saying youth involvement will contribute to unlocking the district’s agricultural potential.
Alfred Nzo has been identified as one of the province’s poorest districts, and Kontsiwe said strengthening agricultural production and improving market access could play an important role in reducing poverty and positioning the district as a key food-producing area.
The annual agricultural show forms part of ongoing efforts by the provincial government to support smallholder farmers, expand market opportunities and promote inclusive growth in the agricultural sector. – SAnews.gov.za
