Africa's hopes rest on Ghana

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Durban - Ghana, the country that is carrying Africa's hope, at the 2010 FIFA World Cup will take on the USA in Rustenberg in a round of sixteen clash.

It is expected to be a combustible affair with the two teams playing some impressive football during the group stages.

The USA produced some valiant efforts to finish first in a group that was expected to be led by England despite having a poor referring decision go against them in the match against Slovenia.

They managed to hold England to a draw and beat Algeria by a goal before qualifying.

Ghana, the first team to qualify in Africa, got their campaign off to a great start with a win over Slovenia.

The Black Stars drew with Australia and succumbed to Germany but not without putting up a tough fight.

Ghana goes up against a fired up American team but with very little World Cup experience.

This is the African side's second World Cup; they played for the first time in Germany in 2006, where they beat the USA in the group stage.

They were eventually beaten by Brazil and had to exit the 2006 World Cup.

Both teams offer an exciting attacking approach which will no doubt form the basis for some exciting action at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Ghana will hope that Asamoah Gyan will net for them and add to his impressive nine goal tally in 2010 thus far.

The Americans though will have to ensure the defence is solid and don't put themselves in a venerable position, similar to the one they found themselves against Slovenia.

The USA have shocked the football world in 2009 when they qualified for the Confederations Cup final so this game is expected to unveil a few surprises depending on which side can hold their nerves.

It is expected that many Africans, including South Africans, will now throw their support fully behind Ghana, the USA therefore might have to contend with the crowd factor swaying towards their opposition.

On the team front, Ghana is not expected to make too many changes to the side that started against German but Dominic Adiyiah could replace Kwadwo Asamoah in midfield.

In the USA camp, Robbie Findley will return from suspension and there are no injury concerns.
