Pretoria - A new born baby, who was abandoned with the umbilical cord still attached, has been given a second chance at life -- thanks to the prompt response of the North West Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Acting North West Premier Raymond Elisha, who visited the infant at the Klerksdorp Provincial Hospital on Thursday, has commended the EMS for saving the baby’s life.

He thanked the residents of Sun City section in Jouberton, who called the EMS after discovering the abandoned baby.

“Their actions saved the life of the new born child,” Elisha noted.

Elisha condemned the abandonment of the child and appealed to young girls and women, who are traumatised by pregnancy, to seek professional counselling and help to avoid putting their lives and those of their unborn babies at risk.

“We condemn the abandonment of the child and call on the baby’s mother to come forward to take responsibility for her son. Alternatively, we appeal to members of the public with information that might assist police in their investigation to approach authorities.” – SAnews.gov.za
