72-hour deadline to find Soweto cop killers

Friday, May 18, 2018

Police Minister Bheki Cele has given police a 72-hour deadline to find the killers of the senior police officer, who was shot dead in Soweto.

Cele has established a task team comprising senior experienced detectives and the Hawks, who will implement the 72-hour action plan to apprehend the killers.

"No one should kill one of our own and sleep at home. For us, as the South African Police Service, [we have to] give answers to the family," said Cele on Thursday.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Brigadier Malefetsane Jonas Mofokeng, who was the Station Commander of Meadowlands police station, had just arrived at his house around 19:00 when he was accosted by an unknown number of suspects who shot him. He was certified dead at the hospital.

At the time of his passing, Mofokeng had served in the police for 37 years.

Both the Minister and National Commissioner General Khehla Sitole have expressed shock and deep sadness over the callous murder.

Police top bass, including the Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata, visited the family of the slain brigadier on Thursday to offer their deepest condolences and support.

Sitole said any attack on a police officer is an attack on the sovereignty of the State.

“Our plea for community participation in stopping this scourge of attacks on police officers is absolutely essential,” Sitole said.
