Pretoria - Negotiations between the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) continue today in a bid to resolve the strike by municipal workers.
Last week, municipal workers went on a nationwide strike calling on Salga to implement a uniform job grading system and to ban the use of external lawyers during disciplinary procedures.
Today marks the second week since the strike by Samwu members began. The two have been in marathon meetings since last week in a bid to end the strike.
Samwu's Deputy General Secretary, Walter Theledi, told BuaNews on Monday that the strike will end once they are satisfied with negotiations and an agreement is reached.
"The strike continues, it will end once we are happy with the outcomes," he said.
In meetings last week, the two parties agreed not to divulge information to the media about their negotiations until talks were complete.
Salga spokesperson, Melisa Kentane, said they have agreed on certain issues, only a few issues need to be finalised.
Since the strike began, uncollected refuse has lined the streets of Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. Many bus commuters have also been stranded. In parts of the country, streets have been trashed by the striking workers.
