Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has extended his deepest sympathy and condolences to the government and people of China over the loss of life and devastation caused by the severe mudslide in northwestern China.

A devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County last week following torrential rain overnight, burying various houses and crushing buildings. Reports indicate that over 1 248 people have died and other 600 people reported missing.

"The people of South Africa grieve with the people of China at this difficult and painful moment. Accordingly, please accept our deepest sympathies," Zuma said on Monday.

China has held a day of mourning for those killed in the floods and mudslides, while teams are continuing to recover bodies.

Public entertainment was suspended with cinemas and karaoke bars closed, and government offices and embassies flew flags at half-mast.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities have pledged to complete the reconstruction of all homes destroyed by June next year.
