President Cyril Ramaphosa has met with the family of the late Captain Daniel Perez, following the South African Government’s intervention to facilitate the release of his remains by Hamas.
The President met with the Perez family on Monday and expressed his condolences following the return of the remains of Perez, who was born and raised in South Africa.
Perez was taken hostage and killed on 7 October 2023.
The meeting follows the South African Government’s efforts to facilitate the release of his remains and assist the family during the difficult period.
President Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to the Perez family and reaffirmed South Africa’s support for an all-inclusive peace process that will deliver lasting peace for the people of Israel and Palestine.
Government assistance in conflict zones
The Presidency said the South African Government remains engaged in assisting South Africans, irrespective of race or religion, who are caught up in conflict zones.
Government also provides assistance to other foreign nationals where such support is requested.
“This includes facilitating the release of South Africans trapped in a war in Syria, citizens that were sold to Russian mercenaries and the safe return of Ukrainian children,” the Presidency said.
The intervention involving the Perez family forms part of the broader assistance provided by government to people affected by conflict and humanitarian crises.
The Presidency said South Africa remained committed to supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and resolving conflicts through inclusive peace processes. – SAnews.gov.za
