Pretoria - As the death toll in the Cambodia stampede rises to 456, South Africa has expressed its deepest condolences to the government and people of that country.

On Monday night, a stampede broke out at Diamond Island Bridge during Cambodia's Water Festival.

The event is the largest annual festival in the country and around two million Cambodians, especially those from rural areas, converge to enjoy the regatta.

While 109 people were reportedly killed instantly in the stampede, 347 of the injured have died in hospitals since. All the victims are from 17 cities and provinces in Cambodia.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims. We know that the resilience of the Cambodian people, which has seen them through very difficult times in the past, will help them to overcome also this loss," said a statement by the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
