Chicago - An armed student, who held 23 students and a teacher hostage in a Wisconsin high school, is believed to have shot himself after all hostages were released unharmed.

A 15-year-old male student took over a classroom at Marinette High School near the end of the school day on Monday, allowing no one to leave and eventually communicating with police through the female teacher by phone.

Police said a high school administrator called authorities just before 4pm, saying a student armed with a handgun had taken 23 classmates and a teacher hostage inside a classroom.

The hostage crisis lasted more than five hours.

Police officers entered the Marinette High School classroom after hearing gunshots at about 8pm and then the armed student shot himself, said Police Chief Jeff Skorik.

The armed student, whose condition remains unknown at the moment, was taken to a hospital, Skorik said.

According to earlier reports, all 24 hostages held by the armed student at the Wisconsin high school were released unharmed Monday evening.

Police said the motivation of the student remains unclear.
